The SIG Sauer P226 is a Swiss/German-made semi-automatic pistol chambered for the .40 S&W, 9×19mm Parabellum and .357 SIG cartridges. It was developed from the earlier SIG Sauer P220, essentially sharing the same basic design but incorporating a higher capacity, double stack magazine in place of the single stack magazine of the P220. The P226 and its variants are in service with numerous law enforcement and military organizations worldwide, including the FBI, the United States Secret Service and the British SAS as their standard issue sidearm.
The P226 was one of two finalists in the XM9 Service Pistol Trials that sought to find a replacement for the M1911A1 in US military service, the other being the Beretta 92FS. While the Beretta ultimately won the contract, the P226 was adopted by the Navy SEALs. Numerous variants of the P226 have been introduced since its development, including the compact P228.
In fiction[]
From the Predator film series, detectives Leona Cantrell and Jerry Lambert both carried P226 pistols as their duty sidearms. Jerry's pistol had a stainless steel finish and black laser sight while Leona's had a standard blued finish and a stainless laser sight. A P226 with a stainless finish was also one of the many weapons in the trunk of Mike Harrigan's car.
Quinn McKenna acquired a P226 following his encounter with the Fugitive Predator in Mexico, although he never used it.
