Ross Everbest is a fictional psychopathic killer and a minor antagonist featured in comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is associated with the Man-Thing line of titles and first appeared in Man-Thing #3 in March, 1974 in a story called "Day of the Killer, Night of the Fool!"

Biography[]

Ross Everbest was born a cripple and had to use a wheelchair in his youth. His history stemmed from a tragic upbringing with a father who died in the last days of World War II before he ever knew him, and a mother who died working as a nurse during the Korean War when Ross was only 9-years-old. This pushed him to learn everything he could about the military. His grandmother brought him to a faith healer named Reverend Mike who miraculously healed Ross, enabling him to walk again. This became the single most important event in Ross' life, and governed the path for his future.

Ross Everbest became a religious fanatic who believed that he was specially chosen by God to punish sinners, whom he referred to as "fools". Donning a black costume, a mask, and a hat, he became the Foolkiller and ventured forth as a costumed vigilante bringing "purification" to those he deemed as fools by way of a high-intensity light weapon. His faith was put to the ultimate test one evening when he found Reverend Mike in dalliance with a prostitute. Ross flew into a rage and strangled the reverend. However, he still respected Mike's role in forging his mission as a redeemer, so he kept Mike's corpse and preserved it. He used the money the reverend had earned from his caravan to finance his campaign.

The Foolkiller's mission brought him to the Florida Everglades where he attacked a gang of bikers called the Skull-Crushers, killing two of their members. He then accosted corrupt corporate business tycoon F.A. Schist. This brought him into battle with the Man-Thing. The beam from the Foolkiller's light weapon dried up all of the moisture in the Man-Thing's body, which caused it to collapse. [1]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The character of Ross Everbest was created by writer Steve Gerber and artist Val Mayerik.
  • Since the passage of time is different in the real world than it is in comic books, all references to Foolkiller's parents connections to World War II and the Korean War must be considered apocryphal.
  • Although Ross Everbest may have been the first person to don the name Foolkiller, he is not the last, or even the most well known. A character named Gregory Salinger, who was introduced in issue #9 of Omega the Unknown in 1977 has operated a Foolkiller for many years and has fought up against Spider-Man, the Defenders, and Deadpool.

Equipment[]

  • Laser gun: A high-tech light amplification ray that "purifies" the Foolkiller's victims.
  • Automobile: A red convertible sports car with remote access to his mobile laboratory.
  • Truck: A mobile laboratory disguised as a moving truck.
  • Wheelchair: Ross required the use of a wheelchair when he was a youth.
