Biography[]
Roman Sionis grew up in a wealthy family from Gotham County. The Sionis' were close colleagues with the Waynes, and Roman became a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne. As an adult, Roman Sionis became the head of Janus Cosmetics. When Janus began to fail however, he blamed Wayne Enterprises for his company's financial shortcomings.
Using a chipped corner from his father's coffin, Roman Sionis carved a marble mask and became an underworld figure calling himself Black Mask. His underlings became known as the False Face Society and they were all forced to wear distinguishing decorative masks. [1]
Black Mask had a confrontation with Batman and Robin at the Sionis family crypt in the cemetery. During the fight, a fire broke out, and Sionis was trapped. Batman tried to rescue him, but could not reach him before the marble mask had burned itself into his face, forever scarring him. Roman Sionis was apprehended and taken to Arkham Asylum. [2]
