The Rock of Death, or "Rocks of Death", is a fictional location featured in the Hammer Horror film series. It appeared in the 1967 feature film The Mummy's Shroud. It appeared in both flashback scenes from two-thousand years ago, as well as scenes from 1920. It is considered a secondary setting in the film.

History[]

The Rock of Death was a bleak mountainous region located somewhere in Egypt, quite some distance away from the city of Mezzara. About two-thousand years ago, the Prince of Egypt, Kah-to-Bey, was forced into exile when his traitorous uncle, Almen-Ta, slew his father, Men-Ta, and laid claim to the throne of Egypt. Men-Ta's loyal slave Prem became the guardian to Kah-to-Bey, and took him out into the deep desert. Despite all of his efforts to protect his charge, Kah-to-Bey eventually succumbed to exposure and starvation. Before dying, he gave Prem the royal seal of Egypt. Prem buried Kah-to-Bey and covered him with the Sacred Shroud. In 1900, a British expedition discovered the mummified remains of Prem. Because he bore the royal seal, many mistakenly believed that he was Kah-to-Bey, which sparked a debate among scholars that endured for two decades.

In 1920, an archaeology expedition led by Sir Basil Walden, recovered the remains of the Prince in the Tomb of Kah-to-Bey, thus answering the twenty-year mystery as to the identity of the previously recovered mummy. The expedition was fraught with peril. The porters deserted the group, a violent sandstorm kept everyone confined to their tents, and Sir Basil was bitten by a poisonous snake. A rescue party led by financier Stanley Preston went out to find Basil Walden's group and succeeded in reuniting with them. Together they found the Tomb of Kah-to-Bey and excavated the remains. The body was taken to a Restoration House in the city of Mezzara.

The Tomb of Kah-to-Bey is the final resting place for the Egyptian Prince, Kah-to-Bey. The slave known as Prem buried Kah-to-Bey inside the tomb, and covered him with a Sacred Shroud. He carved a marking outside the tomb, identifying its occupant. In 1920, Stanley Preston financed an archeological expedition to find the Tomb of Kah-to-Bey. The expedition was led by archaeologist Sir Basil Walden, Egyptologist Paul Preston, linguist Claire de Sangre, and photographer Harry Newton. Despite great hardship, the group succeeded in uncovering the tomb and discovering the body of the Egyptian Prince.
