Return of the Fly is an American feature film of the science fiction and horror genres. It is a sequel to the 1958 film The Fly and deals with the "science runs amok" film trope. It was directed by Edward L. Bernds with a screenplay written by Bernds based on concepts developed by George Langelaan. It was produced by the Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and premiered in the United States on July 22nd, 1959. This movie was followed by a sequel, which was called Curse of the Fly, which was directed by Don Sharp and released in May, 1965.

The script for the movie was specifically crafted so as to make use of all of the set pieces used in The Fly.
According to producer Bernard Glasser, the budget for Return of the Fly was $275,000.
Principal shooting on Return of the Fly began on February 2nd, 1959. Production concluded in March, 1959.
Return of the Fly was filmed at 20th Century Fox Studios, located at 10201 Pico Boulevard in Century City in Los Angeles, California.
Actor Vincent Price was paid $25,000 for his work on Return of the Fly. Price received his full wage despite the fact that some of his scenes had been cut down.
Some have theorized that director Edward Bernds was brought on to replace Kurt Neumann - director of the first film, who died on August 21st, 1958 - a month after the premiere of The Fly. In truth, Neumann was never considered for taking on the directing chores for the sequel.
Actor Francisco Villalobos's surname is mis-spelled as Villalobas in this film.

Release[]

Return of the Fly was released on July 22nd, 1959. It shared double-billing with The Alligator People, which was also produced by Associated Producers, Inc. and 20th Century Fox.
This movie was included as the second feature in the Vincent Price Collection II Blu-ray set produced by Shout! Factory on October 21st, 2014.
Return of the Fly is included on "The Fly Collection" Blu-ray release by Shout! Factory, which was released on December 10th, 2019. All films in this collection were also released as single films.
The film was also released on Blu-ray in Australia in 2017 as part of "The Fly: Ultimate Collection" set.

As of 2023, Return of the Fly holds a weighted average score of 5.7 out of 10 on the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), based on more than 4,900 user ratings.
On the movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Return of the Fly has a certified "rotten" Tomatometer rating of 36% based on fourteen approved critic reviews. It has five positive reviews and nine negative reviews, averaging 4.90 out of 10. The movie has an audience score of 26% based on more than five-hundred verified user ratings, averaging 2.9 out of 5.
On Letterboxd, Return of the Fly has a weighted average of 2.82 out of 5 based on 3,161 user ratings.

Trivia[]

Actor Vincent Price reprises his role of Francois Delambre from the first film. He is the only actor to appear in multiple films.
The punk rock band known as the Misfits recorded a song entitled "Return of the Fly". The song was written by Glenn Danzig and appeared on the A-side of their 1978 album Static Age.

Story Notes[]

The events of this film take place fifteen years after the events of The Fly. Assuming that the first film takes place in the same year in which it was released, that would make the events of Return of the Fly happening in the year 1973. Conversely, it could be argued that the events of the first film take place in 1944, thus maintaining the fifteen-year gap between installments.
Helene Delambre from the original film, is revealed to have died just prior to the events of the movie. The film opens with her funeral.
