Renee Montoya is a fictional police detective and one of the main characters from the FOX Network television series Gotham. She was played by actress Victoria Cartagena and first appeared in the pilot episode of the series.
Biography[]
Renee Montoya was a member of the Major Crimes Unit of Gotham City and was the partner of Detective Crispus Allen. She was also the former lover of Barbara Kean, who eventually became involved with rookie detective Jim Gordon.
As a cop, Montoya was partners with Crispus Allen. They were two of the few members of law enforcement in all of Gotham who were not corrupt and accepting bribes from the city's top criminal overlord, Carmine Falcone. As such, Montoya and Allen took a hardline approach towards weeding out graft and corruption in the system. They made use of an informant named Oswald Cobblepot, who was a "towel boy" for one of Falcone's highest ranking lieutenants, Fish Mooney.
When news began to circulate that James Gordon had murdered Cobblepot, they began investigating him, eventually swearing out a warrant for his arrest. When Cobblepot turned up alive however, they realized that they were wrong, and that Jim Gordon was a man they could trust. Afterward, Montoya and Allen did what they could to aid Gordon and his verbose partner, Harvey Bullock in fighting the city's underworld.

- Renee Montoya is a based on a DC Comics character of the same name. The comic book version of Montoya was originally a Gotham City beat cop who was introduced in Batman #475 in March, 1992.
- The Gotham version of Renee Montoya was created by Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon.
- In the comics, Montoya eventually became the costumed hero known as the Question, whereas Crispus Allen became known as the Spectre.
- The comic book version of Renee Montoya was also revealed to be a lesbian who had a relationship with Barbara Kane (not Kean as in the TV series), who was also a costumed hero in her own right named Batwoman.
- A version of Renee Montoya also appeared in the 1990s cartoon series Batman: The Animated Series where she has been voiced by Ingrid Oliu, Liane Schirmer and Adrienne Barbeau.
