Red Sonja is a fictional barbarian warrior and a comic book character featured in titles published first by Marvel Comics, and later by Dynamite Entertainment. She was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith and made her first appearance in Conan the Barbarian #23 in February, 1973. After making sporadic appearances in that title, Sonja also had the spotlight title in issues of Marvel Feature before launching into her own ongoing comic book series. Following its discontinuation, a more fully clothed Red Sonja returned for two limited series projects in the 1980s. The character faded into obscurity throughout most of the 1990s and early 2000s, but found herself once again spearheading her own comic book franchise, this time published by Dynamite Entertainment.

Going to Riverdale[]
Red Sonja partnered up with Vampirella once again and journeyed to the idyllic town of Riverdale to investigate mysterious supernatural occurrences. Their search brought them to the Riverdale morgue where they found a body of a high school teacher, whose murder had been committed by the Cult of Chaos. Also investigating the strange deaths were two amateur reporters from Riverdale High School named Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge. Betty and Veronica helped create cover identities for Sonja and Vampirella so they could continue their investigation under the guise of being school students.
Red Sonja's brusque demeanor caused teachers to find her challenging. When she learned about the school's football team, she realized that there was in fact something in this quaint town to sate her need for violence. Red Sonja became the star player for the Riverdale Bulldogs. [2]
