Plot[]

Red and Nathan

Red and Nathan.

Federal agent Nathan Kessler is engaged to marry his fellow agent Virginia Sullivan. Virginia invites Nathan to her family's home, where she is referred to as "Red", but is reluctant to reveal the family's secret life. When Nathan encounters an injured man named Xavier who mysteriously turns to ash moments later, the Sullivans have little choice but to let Nathan in on the family's stock and trade. They are werewolf hunters. The first female of every generation is given the code name "Red". Although werewolves normally only shape-shift on the nights of the full moon, Nathan encounters another man named Gabriel who can change into a monster at will. Gabriel attacks Nathan in the woods near the Sullivans' house, but allows him to live.

The following day, the Sullivans determine that the werewolves have broken a time honored truce between their respective factions and its time to go on the hunt. Red shows her fiancé their armory and tells him that only weapons made of silver can kill a werewolf. Nathan learns that once a person becomes a werewolf, it is like a disease or a drug habit that cannot be overcome. The only way to turn someone back is if they kill the progenitor werewolf before the progeny takes a human life. Along with her younger brother Jake and her older sibling, Sheriff Marcus Sullivan, she brings Nathan on the hunt with her as they explore the emptied streets of a nearby abandoned town called Tanner's River - a town has been taken over by werewolves.

In one of the abandoned houses, Gabriel and his followers usher in a crowd of humans that they have abducted. Some of them are marked for turning, but the others will be used for the hunt. Gabriel shows them the power of his evolved state and his ability to shape-shift on a night that does not fall on a full moon. Two scared humans flee from the building and run for their lives.

The two humans come upon Red, Nate, Marcus and Jake as they are canvassing a neighborhood block. While the others take the humans under their care, Nate instinctively targets a werewolf pursuer in the woods and shoots him. Marcus asks him how he knew there was a wolf out there, but Nate muses that it was likely just instinct.

That night the full moon rises and Nate begins to convulse. Apparently Gabriel had bitten him after all and he is now turning into a werewolf. Breaking loose from the farm house that the family is holed up in, he scrambles on the ground and lunges at Red. She incapacitates him with a taser. They then lock him up. Marcus wants to kill Nate, but Red and Jake convince him to give him a stay of execution in the hopes of getting to Gabriel first.

The next day, Red, Marcus and Jake go back to Tanner's River in search of Gabriel and his pack. While scoping out a seemingly abandoned building, they are ambushed by Gabriel's clan who take them out using knock out gas. When they come to, all three hunters are bound. Gabriel tells Marcus and Jake that they are the next targets for the hunt so that his new progeny can hone their skills. Virginia however, is being kept behind for his own purposes.

Marcus and Jake are forced to run for their lives and have precious little time before the werewolf pack descends upon them. Marcus gets slashed and then eviscerated, but Jake manages to get away. He gets back to town where he finds Gabriel. Jake attacks as Gabriel shifts into werewolf form, but he cannot defeat him.

The following day, Nathan is let out and goes to Tanner's River where he finds Marcus and Jake's remains. He goes to the building where the werewolves have been hiding and finds Victoria, whom he frees from her bonds. They collect the bodies of her brothers, load them into Marcus' truck and bring them back home.

Marcus and Red

Marcus and Red.

That evening, Virginia plans to make her final stand against Gabriel and his pack, whom she knows will be coming to her home once the full moon rises. Nathan is taken back to his cage where Grandmother Sullivan keeps vigil over him. The werewolves assault the house and Virginia systematically takes them down one by one using the weapons that she had previously staged across the estate. Grandmother Sullivan, unwilling to allow Nathan to live, begins shooting at him through the cage with a shotgun as he takes on werewolf form. None of the shots strike his heart however and he breaks free of the cage, mauling the old woman to death. Downstairs, Gabriel arrives at the house and attacks Virginia. They fight upon an upper landing, but Virginia manages to wound Gabriel by smearing silver dust across his face. She pushes him over the landing, then leaps down after him, plunging a silver blade through his heart. Gabriel disintegrates into ash.

It is too late to save Nathan however, as he has already taken his first human life. She runs out into the forest calling for him. Nathan attacks Virginia in werewolf form. When she awakens the following morning, she realizes that she has been bitten. She finds Nathan who tries to convince her that they can still have a life together even if they are now werewolves. Virginia knows that she cannot save both Nathan and herself, so she stabs him through the heart as they tearfully embrace.

A few short years later, Virginia is seen sitting in her home reading a story to her young daughter; Nathan's child. Because Virginia killed Nathan without taking a human life, she does not suffer the curse of lycanthropy. But who is to say whether her daughter is free of the curse or not?
