Psi 2000 is a fictional planet featured in the 1960s science fiction television series Star Trek. It appeared in the fourth episode of season one, "The Naked Time". The planet has also been referenced in the written adaptation of the story by James Blish featured in the novel Star Trek 1.

History[]

Psi 2000 was a Class P planet that disintegrated in 2266. Prior to the disintegration of Psi 2000, a Federation survey team established outpost ULAPG42821DB on the planet, and was with studying the large gravitational shifts, which also resulted in large strings of water molecules and polywater, which in turn resulted in the Psi 2000 virus. The members of the survey team soon succumbed to the virus and quickly died when someone adjusted the environmental controls and they froze to death.

When the USS Enterprise arrived to collect the team several weeks later, they discovered that the whole team were dead, but the virus was also transferred to the Enterprise by Lieutenant Joe Tormolen. The virus quickly spread through the Enterprise crew, and in a state, Lieutenant Kevin Riley entered engineering and shut-down the warp engines, leaving the Enterprise stranded in decaying orbit of a disintegrating planet. Thankfully, Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott (with less than 30 minutes) was able to initiate a matter/antimatter cold-restart of the engines; breaking away with enough power for a Slingshot effect-thus escaping from danger. Points of Interest[]

ULAPG42821DB
ULAPG42821DB was a Federation science outpost established on the Class P planet, Psi 2000, in 2266. The outpost was established on the planet so that Federation scientists could study the massive shifts in the gravitational fields on the planet as it began to break up. As the scientists observed the break-up they soon became infected by the Psi 2000 virus and began to act in an irrational manner. When the USS Enterprise arrived to evacuate the outpost, a landing party discovered that the base had been exposed to the elements and all of the research personnel were dead. [2]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • In the novelization of "The Naked Time", Federation outpost ULAPG42821DB is nicknamed La Pig.
  • The physical appearance of Psi 2000 was digitally remastered for the home video re-release of "The Naked Time". In addition to increasing the sharpness of the planet, the planet's atmosphere corona can also be seen as the Enterprise passes by it.
