History[]
During the waning days of World War II, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler engaged in numerous programs combining science and the occult in order to conceive a quick an decisive victory to the end the war. One of his many Doomsday scenarios was Project Ragna Rok, or "The Fatal Destiny", whose name was taken from the Norse of Ragnarok - a final glorious battle that would result in the end of the world.
Project Ragna Rok was headed up by Nazi general Klaus Werner von Krupt. Four of his key advocates in the project were the Russian occultist Grigori Rasputin, Ilsa Haupstein, Karl Ruprect Kroenen, and Leopold Kurtz.
On December 23rd, 1944, Rasputin conducted a ritual on Tarmagant Island to summon the Ogdru Jahad - the dragons of Revelation, whom were prophecied to return to Earth and bring about the end of the world. The ritual was interupted by the intervention of a joint U.S./U.K. team of soldiers, and the dimensional rift that Rasputin had opened, was shut down. Something from the other side, came through however - an infant demonic being, whom the soldiers took to calling Hellboy. Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who was an occult scholar, took charge of the Hellboy creature and raised him under the auspices of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.
