Power amplification may be defined as either a technological process or a super-power. It represents an object or person's ability to increase the potential power levels of another object. In Marvel Comics continuity, the mutant known as Fabian Cortez has the ability to increase the power levels of other mutants. While this may seem like an ineffective ability, Cortez found creative ways to unlock its offensive potential. For example, he once increased Psylocke's mental powers to a point that she could not block out the screaming thoughts of those around her, which left her vulnerable to attack.
In other forms of science fiction, power amplification can be found on space vessels and with various weapons systems. In both the Star Trek and Star Wars franchise, laser weapons can have fluctuating power levels ranging from non-lethal or "stun" settings to lethal settings, including disintegration.
