Notes & Trivia[]
- This film is a dark re-interpretation of Popeye the Sailor Man, who is a cartoon character created by E.C. Segar in 1929 and first appeared in comic strip form in Thimble Theatre. The character since went on to appear in numerous animated projects as well as a live-action film in 1980 by Robert Altman starring Robin Williams. Popeye is portrayed with an exaggerated chin, one eye, proportionally enlarged forearms, one of which has an anchor tattoo. Trademark characteristics include smoking a pipe, a speech impediment and an addiction to performance enhancers, exemplified through the continuous consumption of cans of spinach.
- Popeye entered the public domain on January 1st, 2025.
- The tagline to this film is "Prepare for a sea of blood".
- Thematic similarities aside, Popeye's Revenge is not part of the shared continuity of films known as the Twisted Childhood Universe, aka the "Poohniverse".
- This movie was filmed in parts of England and Scotland. It was shot over a period of nine days.
- There are a total of sixteen credited cast members in this film.
- This movie was made available for period of five days on Amazon Prime beginning on February 19th, 2025.
- Actor Steven Murphy, who plays Popeye, is credited as Steven Joseph Murphy in this film.
- On Letterboxd, Popeye's Revenge has a weighted average review score of 1.63 out of 5 based on 1,617 user ratings.
- On Moviedb.org, Popeye's Revenge has a user score of 47%.
- The setting for this film is the fictional town of Sweetville, located somewhere in the United Kingdom.
- In the film's credits, Tara and Lori are identified by their first name only. The film itself supplies the surname of Cooper.
- This film establishes that Popeye's actual given name is Johnny.
- Background story elements for the Popeye character borrow from two other iconic film villains; Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th. The opening narration as well as exposition delivered by Lori establishes the townies trapping young Popeye inside of his home and setting it on fire, similar to the origin of Freddy Krueger. Another detail implies that Johnny "died" in nearby lake, though no body was ever found, and he has returned as a super-strong near silent killer, ala Jason Voorhees.
- This is the second live-action interpretation of the Popeye character following Popeye in 1980. A similarly themed film, Shiver Me Timbers was released on February 28th, 2025 and Popeye the Slayer Man was released shortly after this film on March 21st, 2025.
