Poker is a family of card games that combines gambling, strategy, and skill. All poker variants involve betting as an intrinsic part of play, and determine the winner of each hand according to the combinations of players' cards, at least some of which remain hidden until the end of the hand. Poker games vary in the number of cards dealt, the number of shared or "community" cards, the number of cards that remain hidden, and the betting procedures.
On Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a plucky demon named Clem was friends with Spike and often played poker with him for kittens, which he ate. Yes... kittens.
On Stargate SG-1, Carol Weterings and her fellow soldiers had little to do other than guard the ubiquitously silent Gate room at Stargate Command. In 1997, while playing a round of poker, Carol noticed movement coming from beneath the tarp covering the Stargate.
In DC Comics continuity, the Royal Flush Gang is a criminal gang that was established by a man named Amos Fortune. They patterned themselves after playing cards that form the poker hand known as a Royal Flush.
The crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D often played poker during their down time. The dealer for each session rotated amongst the crew with Will Riker, Deanna Troi, Geordi La Forge, and Data all taking turns. After seven years of voyages under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Picard finally accepted their invitation to join them and dealt the opening hand.
