A photographer is one who takes and develops photographs on a professional basis. A person who takes a picture of kitten with his camera phone is not a photographer. That is just some schmuck who figured out how to use the camera app on their iPhone. Professional photographers may work in any variety of industries including the fashion industry, journalism or entertainment industry. Photographers who focus on targeting celebrities have garnered a rather negative reputation and are generally referred to as paparazzi.
In comics[]
Reporters and photographers seem to be a steady staple in comics of the superhero fantasy genre. In titles published by DC Comics, the most famous shutterbug is without question, Jimmy Olsen. This aspect of Olsen's personality has remained fairly consistent over the past several decades, and even representations of him in other media such as films and cartoons present him with a camera slung ubiquitously about his neck.
Another DC Comics character who is known for working behind a camera is Donna Troy. During her time as a member of the New Teen Titans, when she was dating school teacher Terry Long, Donna made a living as a professional photographer, taking pictures of models and such for magazine spreads. One of her most popular models was also her friend and teammate, Koriand'r, also known as Starfire.
In the Marvel Universe, the character of Peter Parker is routinely portrayed as a photographer employed by the Daily Bugle. As Peter is also the wall-crawling hero known as Spider-Man, it comes as no surprise that he would be able to get shots from heights and angles that nobody else could possibly hope to achieve. Peter's favorite tactic was to web-sling his camera to some building cornice, set it on a timer, an then take pictures of himself in action, which he would then sell to the Daily Bugle's publisher, J. Jonah Jameson.
