"When Ghosts Walk!" is the title to the first story featured in issue #1 of the second Phantom Stranger ongoing comic book series published by DC Comics. It was written by John Broome with artwork by Carmine Infantino & inks by Joe Giella and lettering by Gaspar Saladino. Additional panels were added courtesy of Bill Draut and Frank Giacoia. The second story, which features Doctor Thirteen, is called "The Hermit's Ghost Dog!" It is written by Ed Herron with artwork by Leonard Starr. The third feature, which stars both the Phantom Stranger and Doctor Thirteen, is called "Defeat the Dragon Curse... or Die!" It is written by Mike Friedrich with artwork & inks by Bill Draut, and lettering by Milt Snapinn. Original stories and new scenes were edited by Joe Orlando. This issue shipped with a May-June, 1969 cover date and carries a cover price of .12 cents per copy.
The character of Doctor Terrence Thirteen was created by artist & inker Leonard Starr. He first appeared in his own series of vignette stories beginning with "I Talked With the Dead" from Star-Spangled Comics #122 in November, 1951. The writer who helmed Doctor Thirteen's introductory story is unknown.
"When Ghosts Walk!" was originally printed in Phantom Stranger #1 from September, 1952. The original title of the story is "When Dead Men Walk!"
"Defeat the Dragon Curse... or Die!" is reprinted in black and white in the Showcase Presents: Phantom Stranger, Volume 1 trade paperback collection, released in December, 2006.
