A penciler is a type of graphic artist who works in the comic book industry. They are responsible for sketching and laying out the main body of artwork for a comic issue or cover. The degree to which a penciler may render a piece varies from simple layouts to highly detailed illustrations.
Once a penciler has completed his or her work (hopefully meeting whatever deadline was set forth to them), the pages are then submitted to an inker, who enhances and embellishes a piece with black ink work before it is submitted to a colorist.
