Linton "Papa" Midnite is a fictional occultist and a recurring antagonist featured in comic books published by DC Comics, many of which are published under DC's Vertigo brand. He is associated with the Constantine line of comic titles and first appeared in Hellblazer #1 in January, 1988. The character also appeared in the 2005 Constantine feature film where he was played by actor Djimon Hounsou and made three appearances in the 2014 Constantine television series where he was portrayed by Michael James Shaw.
Biography[]
Papa Midnite is a powerful Jamaican voodoo priest operating in Manhattan. Midnite was born as the second of twins, Midnite and her older sister Luna learned the art of voodoo from their mother, when Midnite and her twin were orphaned, the brothers decided to use their magical powers to deceive evil men to benefit from a good life, but the brothers were discovered by their blows, Midnite decided to kill Luna so that she would have a quick and painless death to prevent something worse from happening to her sister in life, when Midnite would end her life. his own life as well, he was prevented from killing himself, consequently cursed to be an immortal as punishment for the brothers' act. He gained his power when he was forced to kill her sister, Cedella, and performed magic on her to condemn her to hell. There, he trades her with demons, to steal secrets and power for him. With that power and connections, he built a vast empire of criminal magic in New York City.
After he sent his old foe John Constantine witch-walking to Hell (or rather, a corner of Hell that he "acquired"), Cedella broke free of her spells. She forced him to take his own life by jumping off the Empire State Building. However, he survived, and went on to expand his empire even more.
Abilities[]
- Voodoo: Papa Midnite possesses the ability to wield a vast array of mystical effects. His powers are rooted in the traditions of the Vodoun religion.
- Necromancy: Through the use of ritualism and mystic devices, Papa Midnite can commune with the spirits of the dead. Papa Midnite has also demonstrated the ability to animate and control zombies.
- Immortality: Papa Midnite is effectively immortal and can heal from fatal injuries. He once survived a fall from the Empire State Building.
