The Oracle is the name of a fictional vessel featured in comic book titles published by Marvel Comics. It first appeared in Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1 in April, 1939 and played a key role in the origin of the Atlantean superhero known as Namor, the Sub-Mariner.
History[]
The Oracle was a special-purpose exploratory vessel commissioned in the early 20th century and captained by one Leonard McKenzie. In 1920, the Oracle was moving through the Southern Ocean en route towards the South Pole. To clear a path through the ice, it began dropping depth charges, unwittingly destroying large areas of the undersea kingdom of Atlantis. At the time, the Atlanteans did not have a suitable military by which to defend themselves, but over the next two decades, they began marshalling their forces, preparing for the day when they would be able to wage war against the surface world. Notes & Trivia[]
- Paul Destine was retroactively added to the crew of the Oracle as the First Mate under Captain McKenzie. Destine eventually became known as Destiny and a foe of the Sub-Mariner. [3]
