- The concept of the wooden man is largely inspired by the Jewish folklore of the golem, which is a large clay figure that comes to life.
- The items found inside the holes in the wooden man's head are a lock of hair, a tooth, a photo of the twin sisters as children, a photo of the twin sisters as adults and a vial of blood. These may be the ingredients needed to animate the wooden man through witchcraft, seeing as it was explained that in the past a witch gifted it to the mother of the twins.
- The apparition that appears at the end is the ghost of the bellboy that was described by Darcy in her curio shop. The object that Ted finds is the cursed hotel bell, which when rung, summons the ghost of the bellboy. The scene implies that Ted dies shortly thereafter.
- Darcy's hand gestures as she lays dying implies that she has some knowledge of witchcraft, or at the very least, the occult, as she is able to animate the wooden man to attack Ivan.
- The 2013 film short How Olin Lost His Eye is a prequel story that features the character of Olin Boole, and was written, directed and produced by Damian Mc Carthy.
