OVA is an acronym, which stands for Original Video Animation. The phrase is generally used in non-US markets, in particular Japan and refers to animated (or anime) projects that are released direct-to-video and are usually of feature length running times. OVA may refer to home video releases in various formats beginning with VHS, Betamax and Laserdisc formats as well as DVD and Blu-ray.
