Nyota Uhura is a fictional character and starship officer featured in the Star Trek mythos. She was a supporting cast member on the original Star Trek television series and was introduced in the first broadcast episode of the show, "The Man Trap". Originally played by singer, dancer and stage actress Nichelle Nichols, she appeared in sixty-seven out of seventy-eight aired episodes of the series. In two episodes, "The Enemy Within" and "The Menagerie (Part 2)", Uhura makes a behind-the-scenes appearance only. Her voice however, can be heard over the starship Enterprise's intercom system. The character also appeared in all twenty-two episodes of the Star Trek: The Animated Series program, which aired from 1973 to 1974. Nichelle Nichols provided the voice for the character as well as several others on the series. Uhura was also a supporting character in the first six Star Trek feature films, where she was again played by Nichelle Nichols. The character was re-imagined for the relaunch film series, simply titled Star Trek, this time played by Avatar actress Zoë Saldaña. In addition to the films and TV projects, Uhura has also appeared in numerous novels, magazines, comic books and video games relating to Star Trek.
