Nicholas Joseph "Nick" Fury' is a fictional soldier and former super-spy featured in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character is part of the mainstream Marvel Universe and was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby in 1963 in the premiere issue of his own ongoing comic book series Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos. The character since went on to share the title spotlight with Doctor Strange in Strange Tales whereupon he became the director of Marvel's super-spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D.. Fury has made numerous appearances in other Marvel Comics titles over the years, often in a supporting role capacity including issues of The Avengers, Iron Man and The Uncanny X-Men as well as his own titles such as Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. and Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The character has also been reinterpreted in various alternate realities as well as licensed media including feature films, television movies, animated programs and video games. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nick Fury is played by actor Samuel L. Jackson.
