Synopsis[]
Danielle Moonstar is having a rough go of things. She is tormented by dreams and visions of a Demon Bear, which she believes is responsible for murdering her family. As with all things with the New Mutants, it takes some prodding from her peers to get her to open up. But Dani has little time to reconcile her fears for a new threat emerges - the Brood! But is this disgusting extraterrestrial menace actually invading the warrens beneath the Xavier estate, or is just another aspect of Moonstar's psychic visions manifesting in the real world? As bad as a demonic ursine monster may be, its got nothing on a hideous insectoid alien trying to implant its babies into you!

Notes & Trivia[]
- This issue carries the approval stamp of the Comics Code Authority.
- The events of this issue lead directly into the events from Uncanny X-Men #167.
- This is the first appearance of the Demon Bear - an evil spirit that plagues Danielle Moonstar. It appears in a dream sequence only in this issue, but will fully manifest in New Mutants #18.
- Danielle Moonstar hails from the mountains of Colorado.
- Danielle Moonstar makes reference to the creature from her dreams previously attacking her in the Danger Room. This took place in New Mutants #2.
- Roberto da Costa makes reference to an uncle named Joao.
- Illyana Rasputin makes reference to the demon Belasco. Illyana had to deal with him in the Magik limited series, which will be chronicled shortly following the events of this issue.
- Roberto da Costa makes reference to "beaming up" to the Enterprise. This is a reference to the original Star Trek television series. The main setting for the show was the Galaxy-class starship the USS Enterprise NCC-1701. "Beaming" refers to the teleportation technology utilized on the show.
- The Brood made their first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #155 wherein they fought (as if you had to guess) the X-Men.
- Sam Guthrie tells the team that "Magnum's on". This is a reference to Magnum, P.I., which was a crime drama series that aired on CBS from December, 1980 to May, 1988. Given that this issue likely hit stands in January, 1983, they would have likely been watching an episode from the midway point of season three, which would have been either "Of Sound Mind" or "The Arrow That Is Not Aimed". Unless of course they were watching reruns.
