A nerf herder is a fictional occupation featured in the Star Wars multimedia franchise. They have never been seen in any canonical source, but have been referenced in the 1980 film Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
A nerf herder is the profession of someone who is tasked with the herding of nerfs. Nerfs are large bovine-like creatures with thick, furry coats and large horns. By Earth standards, they are the equivalent of cows.
Referring to someone who is a nerf herder when clearly they are not one may be construed as an insult. While stationed at Echo Base, Rebel Alliance officer Han Solo got Leia Organa so frustrated that she called him a stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder. Solo took exception to being called "scruffy-looking".
Notes[]
- Nerf Herder is also the name of a musical group. They composed and performed the theme song used on the 1997-2003 television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
