Nees was a young man from Smallville, Kansas. In the early 2000s, he worked for the Lowell County Sheriff's Department as a deputy under Sheriff Nancy Adams. Nees assisted Sheriff Adams with apprehending Paul Hayden, who was wanted for assaulting Doctor Helen Bryce.
