Nathan Juran was a Hungarian filmmaker born in Gurahumora, Bukovina, Austria-Hungary on September 1st, 1907. He worked on several science fiction projects for both film and television and was mostly active during the 1950s and 1960s. His first work in the science fiction genre was the 1957 monster movie The Deadly Mantis. That same year he directed 20 Million Miles to Earth, arguably his most popular film to date, owing largely to the stop-motion animation special effects of Ray Harryhausen. He followed this up with one of his lesser-known works, The Brain from Planet Arous. In 1958 Nathan Juran directed his second most well-known film, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman starring Allison Hayes. In 1964 Juran adapted H.G. Wells' 1901 novel First Men in the Moon for the big screen.

In addition to his film work, Nathan Juran also worked on episodes of several different television programs, many of which were produced by Irwin Allen for his production company Irwin Allen Productions. His TV credits include four episodes of World of Giants, four episodes of Men Into Space, three episodes of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, five episodes of The Time Tunnel, thirteen episodes of Lost in Space and five episodes of Land of the Giants.

Nathan was often credited by the name Nathan Hertz to disassociate himself from films that he was not particularly pleased with. Hertz wass Juran's middle name. He passed away in Palos Verdes Estates, California on October 23rd, 2002 at the age of 95.
