Nano spiders, or nano-spiders, are fictional items featured in the Friday the 13th multimedia franchise. They appeared in the 2002 feature film Jason X, directed by James Isaac and written by Todd Farmer.
Nano spiders is the informal name attributed to a form of nanotechnology used in the mid 25th century. Like any form of nanotechnology, they are microscopic machines that work in tandem with one another to achieve a preprogrammed objective. In Jason X, they are used as medical devices designed to repair damaged tissue. In the year 2455, nano spiders were used to revitalize the severed limb of a field trip student named Stoney aboard the exploratory research vessel, The Grendel. This same technology was used to revive a 20th century woman named Rowan, who had been preserved for more than 400-years.
Another refugee of the 20th century aboard The Grendel was Jason Voorhees. As the crew of the ship could not detect any life signs from Voorhees, they did not attempt to rejuvenate him. As it turned out however, Jason revived on his own and went on a killing spree.
After a fight with the robotic Kay-Em 14, Jason was slammed into a nanotech bed, which partially destroyed it. This incident also activated the nano spiders. Due to malfunction, the nano spiders fused organic matter with inanimate metal from the debris, transforming Voorhees into a cybernetic super-killer colloquially known as Über Jason.
