Moorland refers to a section of land characterized by uncultivated vegetation growing in acidic soil, often found in various hill lands. This often includes wetlands environments such as those found in Sedgemoor and Dartmoor in South West England. Residents of these areas often refer to Moorland zones as "the moors". Moorlands of note in England include the Pennines, the Lake District, the Dark Peak, and the Forest of Bowland.

On the Showtime television series Penny Dreadful, there is an area of farmland in the West Country called Ballentree Moor. This area was sparsely populated, but it did contain a stone cottage occupied by a two centuries old witch named Joan Clayton.
