Monster Men is a term applied to a group of hideous super-strong freaks featured in comic books published by DC Comics. They are associated with the Batman line of comic book titles and first appeared in Batman #1 in June 1940. A version of the Monster Men also appeared in episodes of the FOX Network television series Gotham, but they had varied appearances and were identified as simply "freaks".
The men who eventually became the Monster Men were all mental patients at an unidentified mental health facility. Mad scientist Hugo Strange conducted experiments upon these men, which increased their stature to more than nine feet tall, and gave them superhuman strength and durability. Strange used his Monster Men to carry out various crimes, which inevitably earned Strange the attention of Batman.
