A Molotov cocktail is a generic name used for a variety of bottle-based improvised incendiary weapons. Due to the relative ease of production, Molotov cocktails have been used by street criminals, protesters, rioters, gangsters, urban guerrillas, terrorists, irregular soldiers, or even regular soldiers short on equivalent military-issue weapons. They are primarily intended to set targets ablaze rather than obliterate them.
In Night of the Living Dead, Ben came up with a plan, which involved getting gas from a nearby shed to fuel an abandoned pick-up truck. To cover their escape, he wanted Harry to light Molotov cocktails and throw them out of an upstairs window at the zombies. Harry did so, and the zombies recoiled from the flames, giving Ben, Tom and Judy enough time to reach the shed.
In Children of the Corn, Burt and a child named Job try to divine a way to stop the evil supernatural presence known as He Who Walks Behind the Rows, which governs a corn field. They douse the cornfields in sour mash and Burt makes a molotov cocktail and pitches it into the field setting the whole thing on fire.
In Zombie High, Aziz Ghazal splashed gasoline onto the floor of Becky's cabin, and then ignited it using a molotov cocktail.
In the film 1408, a guest at the Hotel Dolphin named Mike Enslin discovered that Room 1408 was haunted and actively trying to kill him. Turning a bottle of cognac into a Molotov Cocktail, Enslin set the room on fire, causing the hotel to be evacuated.
In issue #6 of the Hellblazer comic book series, the British Boys take a molotov cocktail and set fire to Ali's newsstand, forcing the man to rush out and attempt to put the fire out.
