A miner is someone who works in a mine. Mines can afford prospectors any number of riches ranging from conventional minerals such as gold and copper to more fictional fare like gulanite. In the 2002 sci-fi/comedy film Eight Legged Freaks, the character of Chris McCormick was the owner of the McCormick Mines, which was a gold mine. On the Syfy original series Defiance, the character of Rafe McCawley was the owner of the McCawley Mines, which, in addition to containing lodes of gulanite, was also where an ancient alien spacecraft had laid dormant and buried. In the 1940 film The Invisible Man Returns, the character of Geoffrey Radcliffe was the former head of the family-owned Radcliffe Colliery in London, England. Geoffrey's business partner and cousin, Richard Cobb, promoted a worker named Willie Spears to the position of superintendent as part of a conspiracy to cover up the murder of Geoffrey's brother, Michael. When Geoffrey was eventually cleared of all charges, several of the miners volunteered to donate blood to help him recover from injuries he sustained while solving the mystery of his brother's death.
