The Mediterranean Sea is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by the Mediterranean Basin and almost completely enclosed by land: on the north by Southern Europe and Anatolia, on the south by North Africa, and on the east by the Levant. Although the sea is sometimes considered a part of the Atlantic Ocean, it is usually identified as a separate body of water. Geological evidence indicates that around 5.9 million years ago, the Mediterranean was cut off from the Atlantic and was partly or completely desiccated over a period of some 600,000 years before being refilled by the Zanclean flood about 5.3 million years ago.
The mythical Hidden Isle is located in the Mediterranean Sea. The Hidden Isle relates to the tale of Odysseus, whose ship was steered towards the Hidden Isle while returning from the Trojan War. It was here that Odysseus and his crew encountered Polyphemus, the mythical Cyclops. They managed to escape by blinding the creature.
Centuries later, the Atlantean known as Namor traveled this region and discovered the Hidden Isle. Namor tricked the Fantastic Four into coming to the island where they encountered the cyclops. (Fantastic Four 9)
Shortly thereafter, Bentley Wittman, aka the Wizard, journeyed through the Mediterranean Sea where he discovered a mysterious woman on an island. This woman, Medusa, possessed long, red, flowing living hair. He convinced her into joining his super-villain team, the Frightful Four. (Fantastic Four 36)
Power player siblings Quinn and Una Stromwyn were sailing on their yacht across the Mediterranean Sea when their assistant, Silvia informed them of an upcoming meeting with the Political Future Group. (Devil's Reign 1)
