Plot[]

In Donnelaith, Scotland in the year 1681, a woman named Aoife suffers a mortal injury from a wild board. Suzanne brings her back to her hut in a desperate bid to heal her, but Aoife gives her alternate instructions, reminding her that the role of a midwife involves death just as much as it involves life.

In present day New Orleans, Rowan Fielding discovers her mother Deirdre who had only moments ago had her throat slit on an elevator at the hotel. After being questioned by the police, Rowan is approached by Carlotta Mayfair, who is now tasked with informing her of her inheritance. Ciprien Grieve meets up with Rowan as well and invites her back to his place where he explains that he is an occult researcher for the Talamasca, who has pledged himself towards safeguarding Rowan.

Rowan continues to have visitations from Lasher, while Ciprien consults with his colleagues as to who may have murdered Deirdre Mayfair.
