Matt Smith is a British television actor born in Northamptonshire, England on October 28th, 1982. He is best known for playing the role of the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor from the popular BBC series Doctor Who. As a youth, he attended the Northampton School for Boys. He initially pursued a career as a footballer until a back injury sidelined him and he turned towards acting instead where he became a member of the National Youth Theatre.

Matt's first professional film work was a short in 2004 called Gotham, Il where he was credited in the role of "curious onlooker". He then went on to play the role of Danny Foster in the TV series Party Animals. He made several more appearances in various shows including episodes of The Street and Moses Jones as well as two television movies, The Shadow of the North and Cyborg Soldier. In Cyborg Soldier, his first science fiction work, he played a character named J.D.

In 2010, Matt Smith was cast to play the lead role of the Doctor in Doctor Who. He was the eleventh actor to play the role since the inception of the series back in 1963 and is to date, the youngest actor to ever play the Doctor. Smith succeeded actor David Tennant and was brought on board during the second part of the "The End of Time" story arc, which bridged the gap between seasons 4 and 5. Matt also appeared in the Doctor Who: Space and Time television movie as well as two episodes of the Sarah Jane Adventures spin-off series. Smith provided the voice for the Doctor on the Doctor Who: The Adventure Games video game in 2010 as well as the Doctor Who: Return to Earth video game for the Nintendo Wii and the Doctor Who: Evacuation Earth video game for the Nintendo DS. He also made a special appearance as the Doctor at the 2011 National Television Awards.
