The Matrix is an American feature film of the science fiction genre, with an emphasis on the cyberpunk film trope. It was written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski and produced by Silver Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was released theatrically in the United States on March 31st, 1999. The film produced two direct sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both of which were also directed by the The Wachowskis. The Matrix stars Keanu Reeves as Neo - a computer hacker who awakens to a reality wherein he discovers that everything he has ever known was but a clever virtual simulation and that humanity has become nothing more than enslaved battery reservoirs at the mercy of an artificial intelligence network. Co-starring with Reeves is Laurence Fishburne as Neo's mentor, Morpheus, and Carrie-Anne Moss as love interest Trinity. Hugo Weaving plays the part of the primary villain in the film, Agent Smith.
