The Mask of Proteus is a fictional mystical object. It appears in comic books published by DC Comics and relates to the Wonder Woman family of comic book titles.
Description & History[]
The Mask of Proteus had great mystical power including the ability to disguise a person's appearance and alter the perceptions of others. The Greek demigod Herakles had used it to seduce Hippolyta of Themyscira, besieging and enslaving the Amazons under her command. Hippolyta later turned the tables on Herakles, using it to repel him and turning his own men against him. Afterward, it was sealed away in the Great Library of Themyscira. [1]
Years later, Hippolyta's own daughter, Princess Diana, would use the mask to conceal her features so she could enter the trial of Bullets and Bracelets, even though Hippolyta had forbidden her from entering the contest. Diana fared excellently, winning most of the competitions, including the final trial, which awarded her the right to act as an emissary to Patriarch's World. Diana removed the mask revealing her true visage before the queen, but Hippolyta was bound by her own decree and had to allow Diana to continue to the world of men. From there, Princess Diana would become known as Wonder Woman. [2]
