- The character of Johnny Blaze was created by writers Gary Friedrich & Roy Thomas and artist Mike Ploog. He first appeared as the title story in Marvel Spotlight #5 in August, 1972.
- This issue carries the approval stamp of the Comics Code Authority.
- Later stories reveal that it was Mephisto who was responsible for bonding Johnny Blaze with Zarathos, but this is again retroactively removed from continuity, re-instituting Satan as the true Devil.
