Notes & Trivia[]
- Marvel Graphic Novel: The Death of Captain Marvel, The Death of Captain Marvel and Death of Captain Marvel all redirect to this page.
- This issue shipped to retailers on January 10th, 1982.
- This volume went to at least eight printings.
- It's true! Not a "What If?", not a hoax, not an imaginary story. Captain Marvel DIES in this issue!
- The death of Captain Marvel is the third death of a major Marvel Comics character, following the revelation of the death of Bucky Barnes (later revealed to actually be alive) from Avengers #4 to the more recent death of Jean Grey in Uncanny X-Men #137 (Yeah, yeah, she came back. And then died. Then came back again. Then died again. Then came back, yadda, yadda, yadda...).
- The cover to this volume is an homage to Madonna della Pietà, which is a marble sculpture by Michelangelo (not the Ninja Turtle) and features the Virgin Mary holding the body of her son, Jesus Christ at Mount Golgotha.
- Mar-Vell's cancer originated after being exposed to high-dosages of radioactivity from Compound 13 while battling the super-villain known as Nitro. This took place in Captain Marvel #34.
- The DC Comics super-hero Superman makes a cameo appearance in this issue.
- Mar-Vell's frequent partner Carol Danvers will not learn of his death until the "Elegy" story from Marvel Fanfare #24 in January, 1986.
