Notes & Trivia[]
- The character of Ted Sallis, aka the Man-Thing was created by writers Roy Thomas & Gerry Conway and artist Gray Morrow. He first appeared in the third story in Savage Tales #1 in May, 1971. Most of the early Man-Thing stories following his inaugural appearance were written by Steve Gerber.
- The tagline to this issue is "We dare you to look inside... The Nightmare Box!"
- This issue is reprinted in black and white in the Essential Man-Thing, Volume 2 trade paperback collection in August, 2008, and in full color in the Man-Thing Omnibus hardcover collection, published in October, 2012.
- This issue was published the same month as Giant-Size Man-Thing #5.
- The splash page of this issue gives the ages of the main characters. The Man-Thing is four, Carol Selby is seventeen, Richard Rory is twenty-five, and Wilbur Unger is fifty-one. Given the rules governing the passage of time in comic books, none of these ages can be construed as canonical.
- As the story finally reveals, Daredevil, Shang-Chi, Spider-Man, and The Thing, who appear on the cover to this issue, do not actually appear in the story itself. They are demons using magic to pose as the super-heroes.
- This is the second appearance of Robert Nicolle as the Scavenger. He appeared last in Man-Thing #19. He appears next in Man-Thing #21.
