Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds was one of the central characters featured in the 2002-03 Fox Network television series Firefly. Played by Canadian actor Nathan Fillion, he was introduced in the first-aired episode of the series, "The Train Job" and appeared in every subsequent episode. The character also appeared in the 2005 spin-off feature film Serenity, directed by series creator Joss Whedon.

Overview[]

Malcolm Reynolds is a veteran of the Unification War, having served on the side of the Independents. Following a disastrous incident at the Battle of Serenity Valley, Mal lost his faith in God and man and retired from the service. He became the captain of a Firefly-class transport ship called Serenity and began accepting odd jobs across the border regions, establishing a network of contacts and being careful to stay two steps ahead of the wary eyes of the Alliance, as well as the murderous Reavers. His crew consisted of fellow veteran Zoe Washburne, her husband Hoban "Wash" Washburne, who served in the capacity of Serenity 's pilot, Jayne Cobb - a mercenary, and the ship's engineer Kaylee Frye. Mal took on several permanent passengers along his voyages as well including a former lover, the Guild companion known as Inara Serra, the pious Shepherd Book, physician Simon Tam and his addle-brained sister River.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Actor Nathan Fillion previously played a villain named Caleb in season seven of Joss Whedon's previous series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He later went on to play the title role of mystery writer Richard Castle in the television series Castle. In the season two episode of Castle entitled "Vampire Weekend", Fillion's character dresses up for Halloween wearing a costume very similar to what he wore on Firefly. The character's daughter, Molly, asks him what he is supposed to be dressed as, to which he replies, "Space cowboy". She responds with, "There are no cows in space, and didn't you wear that, like, five years ago?". The episode aired approximately five years after the release of Firefly. [1] In the season three episode, "Close Encounters of the Murderous Kind", Fillion's character is shown speaking Mandarin. When Stana Katic's character asks him where he learned it, he tells her "I learned it from an old show I used to love". This is another wink towards Firefly where Mandarin Chinese was a common dialect featured throughout the 'Verse.
  • River Tam indicated in the pilot episode that Mal is Latin for "bad". [2]
