Notes & Trivia[]

Allusions[]

  • The title of this episode is taken from a song lyric from the 1972 folk song "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" by Jim Croce, which appeared as the title track of his third studio album. The lyrics of the chorus are as follows:

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim

  • One of the dream sequences featured in this episode is a parody of the 1950s comedy program I Love Lucy. In the episode "Lucy and Superman" from January 14th, 1957, former Adventures of Superman star George Reeves donned the familiar red and blue to attend a birthday party for Little Ricky.
  • Lois Lane has a dream sequence patterned in the style of a James Bond movie. James Bond is a fictional British super-spy created by author Ian Fleming, and appeared in a series of books, beginning in 1953. The books were later adapted into a successful film franchise with several notable actors playing James Bond, including the late Sean Connery, as well as Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig. One of the eponymous character's trademark greetings is "My name is Bond... James Bond". Clark imitates this line by saying "My name is man. Superman". Coincidentally, series star Teri Hatcher will go on to play a Bond Girl named Paris Carver in the 1997 film Tomorrow Never Dies starring Pierce Brosnan.
  • Tim and Amber Lake are shown to have stolen the Batmobile. It is the same car that was used in the films Batman and Batman Returns. This episode aired shortly after the release of Batman Forever, which introduced a new Batmobile.
  • One of the historical figures that appears in a dream sequence is Jimmy Hoffa. James Riddle Hoffa was an American labor union leader who served as the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1957 until 1971. He disappeared on July 30th, 1975 and was declared legally deceased on July 30th, 1982. Popular theory posits that Jimmy was assassinated by members of organized crime.

Quotes[]
