Life energy absorption is a super-power that reflects a user's ability to drain another life-form's life energy, causing them to weaken and grow ill, ultimately killing them. Some races of aliens or even terrestrial creatures such as psychic vampires may possess this power. Some mystic users can manipulate the chi or life energy of others. In a spiritual sense, this involves the weakening or extraction of the soul from a life-form. Some superhuman beings may be immune to this effect if they have their own innate power to countermand it such as immortality or accelerated healing.
In the Stephen King novel Doctor Sleep, there are a clan of long-lived "energy vampires" known as the True Knot. Led by Rose the Hat, they sustain their longevity by siphoning off the psychic life energy of others, which they call Steam. This energy has also been referred to as "shining".
