Leprechaun: Origins is an American independent feature film of the "creature feature" subgenre of horror. It was directed by Zach Lipovsky with a screenplay written by Harris Wilkinson and Scott Salter. It was produced by WWE Studios and opened to limited theatrical release on August 22nd, 2014. Four college students: Sophie, Ben, David, and Jeni, travel to rural Ireland to study its mythology and ancient culture. Stopping at a pub, they meet an older Irish man named Hamish who offers to give them a lift to an abandoned house they can use near some ancient Celtic caves. The travelers soon discover that the kind offering was not for their benefit, but rather as a means of sacrifice to a primordial Leprechaun that requires a tithe of flesh and blood.

Notes & Trivia[]
- Despite its name, this film has no continuity connection to the other films in the Leprechaun film series. This film does away with Warwick Davis' interpretation of a slapstick wise-cracking little person with buckled shoes and a green coat in favor of a more monstrous primordial creature. The titular antagonist is now portrayed by WWE super-star Dylan "Hornswoggle" Postl. [1]
- There are a total of twelve credited cast members in this film.
- Production on Leprechaun: Origins began in July, 2013. [2]
- Leprechaun: Origins was made available on video-on-demand on August 26th, 2014. It was made available on DVD and Blu-ray on September 30th, 2014. [3]
- This is the first film in the series to take place entirely in Ireland. However, it was actually filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
- WWE Studios is an adjunct of World Wrestling Entertainment, known for producing professional wrestling engagements such as WWE: Raw, WWE: Smackdown, WWE: NXT, as well as numerous pay-per-view events including "Wrestlemania". WWE Studios also produced the 2006 slasher film See No Evil featuring wrestling super-star Glenn "Kane" Jacobs, and its 2014 sequel See No Evil 2.
- Dylan Postl, who plays the Leprechaun, is a professional wrestler for World Wrestling Entertainment, who is best known by his in-ring name "Hornswoggle". He is credited as Dylan "Hornswoggle" Postl in this film.
- The opening scene with Catherine and Francois running through a field bears absolutely no connection to the rest of story. The characters are never referenced again in the film.
- Actor Bruce Blain passed away in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on May 15th, 2021 at the age of 55.
- The mythology provided in this story combines the folklore of the Leprechaun with that of the Tuatha Dé Danann, which is an entirely different type of Irish race.
Cultural insensitivity[]
- Yes, its true. All males in Ireland are named either Sean, Ian or Hamish.
- Yes, its true. Everyone in Ireland dresses like they just stepped out of the 1930s Great Depression.
- Yes, its true. Everyone in Ireland spends their afternoons sitting stoically in a dark and dusky pub sipping back pints of Guinness (Okay, this one might be slightly accurate).
It Kinda reminds me of...[]
There are elements of this film that are visually similar to scenes from other movies.
- An American Werewolf in London: Travelers from abroad pop into a townie pub and earn uncomfortable stares from the locals.
- Jurassic Park III: The Leprechaun(s) leave trail patterns in high fields as it hunts its prey, much like the trail-blazing velociraptors do.
- Midsommar: Several college kids travel abroad for the sake of academic study. Some of them take their studies seriously. Some of them are just there to party.
- Predator: The Leprechaun has night-vision similar to the infrared tech that the Predator uses.
- Pumpkinhead: The Leprechaun kinda looks like a mini-Pumpkinhead.
