They are based on previously existing comic book characters featured in titles published by DC Comics, though they usually worked alone and were not known as the Legion of Doom. The group served as the primary antagonists of the 1978 Hanna-Barbera Productions series, Challenge of the Super Friends. They first appeared in the premiere episode of the show, "Wanted: The Super Friends", and have appeared (in whole or in part) in each episode of the series.

History[]

DC Television Universe[]

In the DC Television Universe, there exists a different team of villains who have come to be known as the Legion of Doom. The name was attributed to them by a hero named Nate Heywood, because they reminded him of a Hanna-Barbera cartoon that he used to watch as a child. This legion began with three primary villains from different points in time, headed up by the futuristic super-speedster, Eobard Thawne, who recruited Malcolm Merlyn from the modern era, and Damien Darhk from the late 1980s. Their quest was to find the fragmented pieces of the Spear of Destiny. Once the spear was restored, it would offer them the ability to remake all of reality at their whim. Along this journey, they were joined by Leonard Snart, who was taken from a point in time prior to his death at Vanishing Point, and Snart's former partner-in-crime, Mick Rory. Rory abandoned the Legion shortly after joining them and returned to his previous team, the Legends.
