- Laurel Lance is based on the character of Dinah Laurel Lance, the second costumed superhero to bear the code name Black Canary. She was introduced in the pages of Justice League of America, Volume 1 #75 in November, 1969.
- The TV version of Laurel Lance was created by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Marc Guggenheim as well as director David Nutter.
- On Arrow, Laurel's father is named Quentin and she has a younger sister named Sara. In the comics, her father was named Larry and she was an only child.
- By season three of the show, Laurel's hair grew more blonde, foreshadowing her eventual evolution into the second Black Canary.
- Actress Katie Cassidy is also known for playing Trish Wellington on thirteen episodes of Harper's Island, Ella Simms on the relaunch of Melrose Place and Juliet Sharp on twelve episodes of Gossip Girl.
