Lake Okobogee is a fictional lake located in Sioux City, Iowa. It appeared in the "Conduit" episode of the FOX Network television series The X-Files. Lake Okobogee was likely named after Okoboji Lake, which is located in Dickinson County, Iowa. In the show, the lake is presented as being a "hot bed" of U.F.O. activity.
In 1993, Darlene Morris brought her children, Ruby and Kevin out to Lake Okobogee to go camping. While Darlene remained inside the tent, Ruby and Kevin slept outside. A strange light appeared in the sky and the camper began violently shaking. The temperature of the surrounding area increased dramatically, singing the tops of the treeline and blackening the top of the camper. As Darlene tried to escape the vehicle, she burned her hand on the door handle. As she emerged, she found that Ruby had disappeared.
Around this same time, a young woman named Tessa Seers had murdered a boy named Greg Randall. Greg was sleeping with both Tessa and Ruby and had gotten Tessa pregnant. Incensed that he would choose Ruby over her, she killed him and buried him in a shallow grave not far from the treeline.
The disappearance of Ruby Morris prompted FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully to look into the matter. Mulder was the one who took note of the excessive thermal conditions in the area, pointing out the singed tree tops, the burns on the camper roof and pieces of super-heated glass on the beach. While speaking to a bartender at a biker bar, he learned that Lake Okobogee had a long history of paranormal phenomena. The bartender even showed him his mutilated ear, which he implied happened as a result of an incident at the lake.
When Mulder and Scully went back out to the lake, Scully noted a pack of white wolves sniffing about a pile of rocks by the treeline. Mulder began pulling the rocks away and found the body of Greg Randall.
Sometime later, Ruby Morris mysteriously reappeared with no explanation and no memory of what had happened to her.
