Krayt dragons are fictional animals germane to the continuity of the Star Wars film franchise. They have never actually been seen in any of the films, but have made appearances throughout the Expanded Universe. The skeleton of a Krayt dragon was briefly seen in a scene that was originally deleted from the theatrical release of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, but was re-inserted in later home video releases of the film as well as the 1997 theatrical re-release. The skeleton can be seen in the first half of the film when C-3PO is trekking across the Dune Sea. Later in the film, Obi-Wan Kenobi imitates the howl of a Krayt dragon in order to scare off a group of Sandpeople that had been attacking Luke Skywalker. The sound he makes was identified as a Krayt dragon call in the Star Wars novelization written by Alan Dean Foster. The first visual representation of a Krayt dragon was illustrated by concept artist Ralph McQuarrie and can be found in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe.
A Krayt dragon was also featured in the 2002 video game Star Wars: Bounty Hunter. On the level identified as "Gardulla's Palace", the Hutt known as Gardulla the Hutt captures bounty hunter Zam Wessell and imprisons her in a dungeon where she is to be fed to her Canyon Krayt dragon. The player, assuming the role of rival bounty hunter Jango Fett, has to free Zam and avoid being eaten by the dragon. The scene ends with the Krayt dragon eating Gardulla (later sources establish that Gardulla proves to be indigestible and actually survives her apparent demise in the game). [1]
Description[]
Krayt dragons are large reptilian animals indigenous to the planet Tatooine in the Tatoo system. They are known to grow to an average length of 45 meters and weigh as much as 2,000 kilograms. The average lifespan of a Krayt dragon is 1,000 years.
History[]
In 0 BBY, the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 were deposited on the planet Tatooine. Deciding to go off in different directions, Threepio wandered into across the Dune Sea, passing the skeletal remains of a Krayt Dragon. [2]
The following day, Luke Skywalker was traversing the Jundland Wastes in search of R2-D2 when he was set upon by a band of Tusken Raiders. After incapacitating Skywalker, the Raiders began ransacking his landspeeder. Desert hermit Obi-Wan Kenobi approached them and imitated the howl of a Krayt Dragon. The Raiders grew scared and ran off. [2]
