Biography[]
King Inferno was a sorcerer who fought up against John Zatara in the 1940s. The two engaged each other upon rocky slope in northern Turkey, which caused an avalanche. Both Zatara and King Inferno were buried, but would emerge later. Zatara was rescued by a woman named Sindella, who would later become his wife.
King Inferno encountered Zatara again in 1945. By this point, he had become the leader of his own coven of warlocks who were in service to a demon named Naedon. King Inferno attempted to craft a ritual that would offer up Ted Grant of the Justice Society of America as a sacrifice. Zatara mystically interfered with the spell, which resulted in a "curse" that gave Ted Grant nine lives.
Decades later, an aging King Inferno would return in an effort to duplicate the ritual and summon Naedon. He captured Ted Grant, as well as his son, Tom Bronson. Seducing Bronson to his side, he sought to use him as the vehicle by which to sacrifice Ted Grant once again. Bronson played along, but in truth, he secretly sabotaged the summoning circle, so that when Naedon finally appeared, he was not bound to Inferno as the warlock had hoped. Naedon was not impressed with King Inferno with the slightest, and was offended by the effrontery of trying to bind him. He grabbed King Inferno and dragged him down into the Hell dimension from whence he came.
