Kawolo's magic ring is a mystical artifact featured in comic book titles published by DC Comics. It relates to the character of Congo Bill, who gained popularity as a back-up feature in Action Comics and even had his own short-lived comic series. In 1959, DC Comics decided to expand on the character in a strange way, via a legendary golden ape called Congorilla. Congorilla, as well as the talisman that governs him first appeared in Action Comics #248.
The talisman is actually a mystical ring that was previously owned by an African native named Chief Kawolo. When the old chief neared death, he bestowed the ring to his close friend, William Glenmorgan - the safari hunter known as Congo Bill. By rubbing the mystic talisman, Congo Bill could transplant his consciousness into the form of Congorilla and guide its actions. As such, the ape's mind was in turn transferred to Congo Bill's body. After continued use of this process, Bill's mind eventually took up permanent residence inside of Congorilla and the ring became an obsolete token from that point onward.
