In 1983, were going to be married. The best man at their wedding was Sam Duke. The night before the ceremony however, Joey drove to Brooke's house and noticed Sam entering the building. He stayed out all night waiting for Sam to leave, but he didn't leave until morning. Joseph believed that Brooke and Sam were having an affair.

At the altar during the exchanging of vows, Joseph accused Brooke of infidelity. She explained that she was afraid to be by herself, and that Sam stayed the night on the couch and that nothing had happened. Joseph didn't believe her however. To satisfy his jealous rage, he pulled out a gun and shot Sam and point blank range, killing him. Brooke's father got up to intervene, and Cavanaugh shot him as well. He then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide. [3]
